Exercise outside in the winter
When talking about survival techniques for training outside in the winter, i.e. training in cold weather, there are two points that are extra important:
- Preparations
- Planning
Preparations
Before you go out into the cold, it is of the utmost importance that you prepare yourself and yours
packing.
Not having a warm jacket or something hot to drink can have huge consequences, just as having it with you can have huge consequences for the positive.
The better we can live into upcoming challenges, the better we can prepare for them.
To keep you warm during outdoor training in the cold, we recommend that you wear a warm hoodie, thick training pants and a hat and gloves. We offer an extensive range of outdoor training wear, which you can find here!
If we don't know what might come our way, we need to take advantage of other people's experiences and the internet is full of tips.
Be one step ahead
In extreme weather, we always need to be one step ahead. Before we start sweating
we have to "harden up" (take off the warmest clothes), and before we start freezing we should already be properly dressed. In this way, we avoid sweaty clothes that cool us down and being too chilled to be able to get dressed again. Staying one step ahead is about being constantly aware of the stress your surroundings put on your body and psyche.
Let your rational thoughts rule when the going gets tough, because if we only listen to our body's signals, we will act too late.
Has it been a long time since you drank? Drink a little, whether you're thirsty or not.
Will you be tired when the clock rings? prepare the pack, the clothes and the coffee maker already the night before!
Regardless of whether you are going out in the cold or just coping with everyday life, it can be good to think about these points. The cold and the dark are stressful for us. We are not naturally made to handle this weather, so we have to adapt. It starts with acknowledging the challenges that exist.
Lists are a perfect way to prepare for upcoming challenges. Write down in advance what you will do and what you will pack. They help to sort things out in the head when the energy and will are low.
