Wool, polyester, or cotton – which is warmest?

When winter arrives, choosing the right material becomes especially important. Wool, polyester and cotton have different properties when it comes to warmth, moisture and comfort, and the best material depends on how the garment will be used.

Wool is known for its good thermal insulation and ability to help regulate body temperature. Polyester is a versatile synthetic material that dries quickly and works well for active days, while cotton is soft and comfortable but is not always the best choice when temperatures drop.

By understanding the differences between these materials, it becomes easier to choose the right clothing for cold winter days.

What is the difference between wool, polyester and cotton?

Wool is a natural fibre that comes from sheep and other wool-producing animals. The material has natural properties that allow it to insulate against the cold while also helping to move moisture away from the body.

Polyester is a synthetic fibre used in everything from sweaters and jackets to base layers and sportswear. The material is durable, lightweight and dries relatively quickly.

Cotton is also a natural fibre and is particularly appreciated for its soft and comfortable feel against the skin. However, cotton absorbs a lot of moisture and dries slowly, which can make it less suitable as an outer layer in cold and wet conditions.

Wool – warm and natural

Wool is one of the most popular materials for winter clothing. The fibres help trap air close to the body, which contributes to insulation and allows wool to feel warm even when temperatures drop.

Another benefit is that wool can help regulate body temperature. This makes the material useful both on relaxed days and when you are active.

Wool is particularly suitable when:

  • You want a warm material for winter
  • You spend longer periods of time outdoors
  • You want a material that helps regulate temperature
  • You prefer natural materials
  • You need clothing for cold days and varying activity levels
  • A wool sweater can, for example, be used as a warm layer underneath a winter jacket.

Polyester – functional and quick-drying

Polyester is a popular material for winter clothing because it is lightweight, durable and dries quickly. It is often used in sportswear, fleece garments and different types of outerwear.

Polyester itself is not automatically warmer than wool, but its properties make it useful in garments designed to retain heat. Fleece, for example, is often made from polyester and can provide good warmth while remaining relatively lightweight.

Polyester is particularly suitable when:

  • You are active outdoors
  • You sweat a lot during physical activity
  • You want a material that dries quickly
  • You need durable clothing
  • You want a lightweight material for layering

For walks, workouts and other activities, polyester can therefore be a practical choice.

Cotton – soft and comfortable

Cotton is one of the most common materials used in clothing and is particularly appreciated for its soft feel and comfort.

When it comes to winter clothing, however, cotton has some limitations. The material absorbs moisture and dries slowly, which means that wet cotton clothing can feel cold against the body.

Cotton can therefore work well for everyday use when comfort is your main priority and you are not exposed to a lot of moisture. During longer periods outdoors or physical activity in cold weather, wool or polyester may be a better alternative.

Cotton is particularly suitable when:

  • You prioritise comfort
  • You mainly use the garment in dry conditions
  • You want a soft everyday garment
  • You do not need quick-drying properties

Which material is the warmest?

There is no single material that is always the warmest. How warm a garment feels is affected by several factors, including the construction of the material, its thickness, the amount of air trapped inside the garment and how it is combined with other layers.

Wool has very good natural insulating properties and is therefore a popular choice for cold winter days. Polyester can also provide excellent warmth, for example in fleece and padded garments.

Cotton can feel warm when it is dry, but its ability to absorb moisture means that it is not always the best option when you need to stay warm outdoors for longer periods.

Wool or polyester – which is better for winter?

Both wool and polyester can be good choices for winter clothing, but they have different strengths.

Wool is a good choice when you want a warm, temperature-regulating material that works well in varying conditions. Polyester is a good alternative when you are active and need clothing that is lightweight, durable and quick-drying.

For example, if you walk to work, a wool sweater can provide a warm mid-layer. If you are exercising outdoors instead, a polyester garment may be more practical because it can help move moisture away from the body and dry more quickly.

What is best in cold and wet conditions?

When it is cold and wet, the material's ability to handle moisture becomes especially important.

Wool retains much of its insulating ability even when the material becomes damp, which is one of the reasons why it is so popular for winter clothing.
